It took a village…

What a heartwarming endeavor this year’s “Season’s Eatings” program was, thanks to all of you! We raised enough money to cover the cost of 1,500 grocery giftcards, created hundreds of beautiful nondenominational greeting cards, addressed and stamped envelopes, and got them all into the mail prior to the holidays. In addition, we expanded to include food pantries in the county this year so that seniors who are food-insecure in those communities could also get a grocery card. Our board members, “A Team”, and hundreds of volunteers gave so generously of their time and financial help. Very special thanks go to Jess Hyman, who managed the cardmaking, envelope addressing and stamping, and volunteer effort to make it all run smoothly.

I had not realized that 3 Squares (Vermont food stamps) does not cover the cost of things like toiletries. So, seniors are able to purchase both food and necessary toiletries with the giftcards.

In addition, we created a few giftbags for seniors we know are in an especially tough place right now. And we provided a small amount of money to some older adults who are at-risk.

Here’s one of the thank-yous we received: “With so many businesses, organizations, and volunteer staff being short-staffed, I cannot thank you enough for taking it upon yourselves to make our holidays a bit more cheerful. Thank you for the gift card. You must know how handy this will come to each one of us. Going grocery shopping has made me think twice before buying fresh fish, fresh fruits and vegetables. It's disheartening to see how much the grocery bill increases every time I shop. Again, thank you for all you do for us less fortunate. May you and your families enjoy a blessed Christmas and a safe, healthy, and happy New Year. Sincerely, Lucille”

Food insecurity is higher now in Vermont that at any other point during COVID. Thank you so much for your part in helping us get more food to the seniors we serve!

We’re already in the planning stages of our expanded partnership with Feeding Chittenden to get more fresh veggies to seniors in the immigrant and BIPOC communities this summer. We’ll partner with local farmers again this year to grow and purchase vegetables that these communities would like to include on their plates.

May 2023 be a healthy and happy year for all of you!

Warmly,

Megan
